Video: Takedown Fundamentals

This week we're returning to basics at NC SYSTEMA, studying standing grabs, holds, locks and takedowns from simple to advanced, from applications to escapes and counterattacks.

It's good to study a variety of locking, wrestling, and throwing concepts - not least because they may be used against you. Skilled wrestlers and grapplers are not to be underestimated, and without sufficient experience in how to escape or control them, you may not get a chance to apply your favoured striking, kicking, or ground-fighting techniques.

That said, a few solid basics can go a long way. With proper timing and precision, you can extrapolate two or three key principles into hundreds of practical techniques. The key is training for efficiency, rather than racing toward the intended result.

Here, Instructors Glenn Murphy and Raymond Desmarais show three fundamental takedown patterns which can be varied and combined to create a wide range of subtle counterattacks.

SFL Episode 84: Menamy Mitanes

This week, we go full martial, with an uncompromising discussion with Menamy “The Tsunami” Mitanes of Systema Los Angeles

Menamy is fascinating, pint-sized powerhouse of a martial artist, with a pedigree that includes Judo, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Systema, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He now trains and teaches Systema under Martin Wheeler, and BJJ under the mighty Rigan Machado. Humble as he is, what Menamy doesn't know about fighting arts probably isn't worth knowing. Here, we delve deep into his experiences and opinions on martial arts - including (but not limited to):

- training JKD under the direct students of Bruce Lee
- training BJJ under Rickson Gracie and Rigan Machado
- discovering Systema with Martin Wheeler
- the practical differences between traditional and modern fighting arts
- what Systema offers that other styles rarely do

Video: Working With Clothing

Moving into the final week of our 3-month curriculum, loosely defined as “spy stuff”. Topics include counter-surveillance, lock-picking, improvised weapons, defense in confined spaces, and more.

Here, Instructors Glenn Murphy and Raymond Desmarais demonstrate some basic principles of working with clothing. In survival situations, clothing can be both a help and a hindrance.

At the very least, you should understand the dangers, and how it can be used against you. Better yet, learn how to use it to your advantage...
