Founder, Chief Instructor
British-born author, scientist and martial artist Glenn Murphy is the Founder of NC Systema. Glenn has over 30 years' experience in training and teaching martial arts, and is a fully certified Systema Instructor under Masters Vladimir Vasiliev and Konstantin Komarov.
As Chief Instructor, Glenn leads most of our group classes - along with all corporate workshops, specialist seminars, weekend retreats, and 1-1 private sessions. A skillful coach and communicator, his unique ability to explain and translate complex ideas have made him a highly popular - and much sought-after - speaker, consultant and instructor.
Born in England and educated in Scotland, Glenn began his martial arts training at a young age. Through this, he developed a keen interest in both biology and philosophy, and studied genetics, physiology and immunology at the University of Aberdeen, while continuing his martial training. After graduation, he travelled to Japan to study Aikido under the late, great Mirohiro Saito at the world-famous Iwama Dojo. He lived, worked and studied in Japan for two years, embracing the language, culture and philsophy. There, he met his (American) wife, became fluent in Japanese, and was awarded his Aikido black belt and teaching certification.
Returning to England in 2002, he attained a Masters Degree in Science Communication from London's Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, and wrote news and features for the journal Nature. Later, he led, trained and managed a 50-member Learning and Education Unit at London's National Museum of Science and Industry. Later, he began writing popular science books aimed at young adults - on subjects ranging from anatomy and zoology to astronomy and robotics. To date, he has over 26 published books - translated into 15 languages, and published in more than 30 countries worldwide. He continues to write today.
Glenn first encountered the Russian martial art of Systema whilst living in London, teaching Aikido and studying for his Masters degree. He was awed by its astonishing depth, power and efficiency in transforming human lives. So he resolved to become a beginner once more, and devoted himself to the study and practice of this little-known art.
Ten years and thousands of hours later, he now teaches Systema-based health, wellness and self-defense classes throughout North Carolina and its surrounding states. His current students include: doctors, scientists, engineers, CEOs, military and law enforcement professionals, movement therapists, martial arts enthusiasts, and everyday people seeking to learn more about themselves. He also teaches seminars to military and law enforcement groups - with past trainees including US Army, US Navy, and the UN Security SWAT Team.
When not training or teaching Systema, Glenn enjoys reading, writing, movies, motorcycling, long walks, long nights in the pub, and long, lazy days with his family.
Jeff Sodemanhas studied Systema under Ken Good, Vladimir Vasiliev, Konstantin Komarov, Mikhail Ryabko, Martin Wheeler, and many other top level instructors since 2005.

Russ is the Head of Communications at Burroughs Wellcome Fund - the world's largest charitable foundation dedicated to the biomedical sciences. When not working or teaching Systema, he enjoys a good pint, a good laugh, spending time with his daughters, and not taking the world too seriously.
